Anita L. Rodriguez and Byzantine, acrylic on canvas, 22x24 inches
"For me, each painting is a prayer - a conversation about the past, born in the present, for the future."
I'm Anita, a native Californian now living in Kentucky. Back in elementary school, I discovered the joy of paint when I first pressed a loaded brush to paper and the sight of liquid color enthralled me. Now I paint bits of landscapes based on my own photographs, working in acrylic or watercolor to relate intimate scenes from nature.
I started exhibiting my artwork in southern California where I collaborated with 12 other women artists on a portfolio of visual work as well as creating 3 murals, holding memberships in local arts organizations and teaching drawing and painting classes at the college level.
When I landed in western Kentucky in 2007, I had no contacts and no following so I began to develop a local exhibition record. I also began teaching art history at the local community college and extended my exhibition record with other regional venues in the Mid South. In 2018, I joined other members of Women Art Makers – a group from my college days – in a 35 year reunion exhibition near my alma mater, California State University Long Beach.
Since I’ve retired from college teaching, I have more time for taking photos, looking for new venues and exploring liquid color!
